The Story Set-Up
In the year 2941 of the Third Age, Eriador lies in a fragile peace. A generation has passed since the fall of Smaug and the tumultuous Battle of the Five Armies. Yet, the shadows of the past still linger, casting a pall over the hearts of its people. In this time of uneasy tranquility, four strangers, each burdened by their own failures and ambitions, find themselves drawn to the bustling town of Bree. Seeking redemption and a fresh start, they hope to carve out new lives amidst the unfamiliar faces and new lands.
Things in Eriador are not as they seem. Strange occurrences and eerie sightings whisper of a darkness that stirs in the shadows. While the townsfolk remain blissfully unaware, these four unlikely heroes notice the signs. Their paths converge, as they are thrust together by fate, forming an unlikely fellowship.
Bound by a shared desire to prove themselves, they embark on a quest that will test their courage and resolve. For in the shadows, an ancient evil awakens, threatening to engulf Eriador in darkness once again. The fate of the land rests in the hands of these four, who must rise above their past and stand as the last line of defense against the impending doom. The journey ahead will be fraught with peril, but it is one they must undertake, for the very survival of Eriador depends on it. They will quickly learn that the enemy they can see is not always the real enemy at all.

Character Creation Guidelines
You will need a new character using The One Ring 2.0 ruleset. Characters can be created in Role (playrole.com) using premade templates that help with the process. Try to align your choices with the story set-up above but leave room for character growth. This is a campaign that could easily grow into several with the right group of adventurers. As a team, the group will finalize character choices and ideals in a Session Zero before we begin the adventure. I will ask you why your character is with this group and why they have a common goal.
This campaign takes place in Middle Earth, so please stay within that realm for continuity’s sake. We can discuss exceptions that won’t unbalance the campaign.
Backstories and character concepts are encouraged. Keep it simple! A paragraph is usually enough to give you something to start with while allowing your character room for growth during the adventure.
Gameplay Themes/Content Warnings
This campaign includes the LOTR elements of hope and shadow designed to give players an authentic Middle Earth feel. Othe elements of horror, violence, treachery, betrayal, and evil will be present as the campaign progresses. Romance is kept PG-13, with a fade-to-black style when it becomes intense. Know that if you have any specific lines and veils they will be heard and handled respectfully.
John’s creativity, world building and attention to detail never cease to amaze me. If you haven’t already, you need to participate in one of his games. You won’t be disappointed! I first participated in his in-person games that he runs in our area and then joined in on this game that he runs on RPG club.
This was a great game. I enjoyed the world building leading up the a ton of combat at the end. The GM was phenomenal at creating the setting and I followed easily with my imagination. So much fun, looking forward to additional plays with him. Definitely recommended as a GM, you will not be disappointed.
I’ve been playing with John for over a year in one of his in-person games. He is a masterful world builder who engages every character during each session. He does an amazing job of creating content that can engage the least and most experienced in our group. The details and story building that come out of the campaigns that he has written are impressive and always fun to play out!
