The Story Set-Up

In the heart of the sinister realm of Barovia, a group of adventurers awakens with no memory of how or why they are there. Surrounded by a deadly fog and pursued by unspeakable horrors, they must fight for their very lives in this dark and dangerous land ruled by the vampire wizard Strahd von Zarovich. As they navigate the treacherous gothic landscape, the adventurers are haunted by fragmented memories and visions of their past. Each step forward is fraught with peril, as they encounter twisted creatures, malevolent spirits, and the ever-present threat of Strahd’s minions. The oppressive atmosphere of Barovia weighs heavily on their minds, driving them to the brink of madness.

The Dungeon Master and the players work together to weave a tale of suspense and dread. As the adventurers slowly piece together their shattered memories, they uncover the true mission buried deep within their minds. Can they survive the relentless onslaught of Barovia’s Lord and his horrors long enough to remember their quest? The fate of the world hangs in the balance as they confront the ultimate evil in a climactic vampire hunt within the dark halls of Castle Ravenloft.

Does Strahd know the truth about their destiny? What does he want in exchange for their freedom. Can they bargain with the mad Lord, or will they succumb to the darkness that threatens to consume them? Only time will tell in this harrowing journey through the nightmare that is Barovia and far beyond.

What you need to play

Please ensure that you have a working mic/headset and webcam (optional but encouraged).

You will need D&D Beyond (FREE version), the AboveVTT app added to your D&D Beyond Account (FREE), and Discord.

Materials Provided

The GM will provide you with access to all materials needed on D&D Beyond including content sharing on D&D Beyond.

Character Creation Guidelines

You will need a Level 1 character using the D&D 5e or 2024 ruleset (Legacy or Expanded). Try to align your choices with the Story Set-Up but leave room for character growth. This is a mini campaign but could easily become a full campaign with the right group of adventurers. As a team, the group can finalize character choices and ideals as we begin the adventure. I will ask you why your character is with this group and why they have a common goal.

This campaign takes place in the Forgotten Realms, so you may prefer to stay within that realm for continuity’s sake. We can discuss exceptions that won’t unbalance the campaign.

Backstories and character concepts are encouraged. Keep it simple! A paragraph is usually enough to give you something to start with while allowing your character room for growth during the adventure.

Gameplay Themes/Content Warnings

This campaign includes horror elements, violence, treachery, betrayal, and evil. Romance is kept PG-13, with a fade-to-black style when it becomes intense. Know that if you have any specific lines and veils they will be heard and handled respectfully.
