Learn to play DnD
In this one-shot, we will walk through the complete dnd experience from character creation to your first (and maybe second) level-up. No experience required. You can downloaded dndbeyond, get the free basic rules, and you’re ready!
The Adventure
This one-shot will see our newly minted heroes aid the people of Phandallin in recovering an important town figure. This quest comes from the beginner module “Dragon of Icespire Peak,” and is designed to teach the elements of roleplay, exploration, and combat, as well as how dnd can be a narrative game with multiple possible outcomes, each featuring a different reward.
Character Creation:
We will be doing this portion together at the start of the session, using the options available in the free basic rules.
If you are reading ahead, we will use the “standard array” option of point distribution.
What Players should bring:
No prior knowledge or experience is required. This is designed to be a First-Timer’s session.
You will need headphones and a microphone, a free discord account, and a free dnd beyond account, as well as the free basic rulebook included therein. Everything else you need will be included with these or provided by me. If you prefer to roll physical dice, you can certainly buy a set of them as well.
What The GM provides:
I will lead the group through the basics of character creation, as well as explain and answer questions about the general gameplay, basic lore, whatever else interests the players. Throughout the campaign we will also go over basic roleplaying tips, how to select rolls, and other concepts that help you make the decisions you want in-game.
I will also provide battle maps, music, and artwork relevant to this quest through the discord server. Additionally, everything contained within the quest comes directly from the source material, so anything I award is appropriate to save with this character sheet for later use. If everyone agrees, we can also expand into the full Icespire campaign using the characters from this one-shot.
JJ is an incredible and knowledgeable DM who has transformed our adventuring party from beginners to intermediate players in just a few sessions. She has a remarkable talent for crafting rich, immersive worlds that burst to life through vivid descriptions and fully flushed-out NPCs. JJ’s ability to weave together intricate plots, thrilling encounters, and complex puzzles has made every session an absolute blast!
Beyond her skills as a DM, JJ fosters a supportive environment where every player feels welcomed and valued. Her infectious enthusiasm for the game and adeptness at adapting to unexpected player choices has made every player decision feel impactful and dynamic. I cannot recommend JJ highly enough!!
I have had the pleasure of playing in one of JJ’s DnD 5e campaigns for nearly a year and the experience has been great so far. My friends and I decided to try our hand at DnD for the first time and JJ has been an ideal GM for a bunch of newbies. She takes the time to walk us through character creation, gameplay, role playing and combat and always has time to answer questions or offer recommendations on how to improve our characters or overall game experience. When our beginner’s campaign took a hard left and we decided to venture beyond the small geographical area the campaign was supposed to be limited to, she quickly built out a universe and storyline for us to explore and we have only been zooming out from the OG quest since. It is very obvious that JJ does her homework and has a thorough understanding of DnD lore and history. As a GM, she is patient, flexible and she has a very healthy sense of humor, not to mention she is an all around rad human being. I’m excited to continue with this campaign and she will be my go-to GM for future campaigns!
